Keeping Independence on the Table for Chicago Seniors and Individuals With Disabilities
The Home Meal Delivery program serves more than 13,000 seniors and individuals with disabilities, delivering 4.7 million meals every year. The program runs in partnership with the City of Chicago and meal service provider Open Kitchens.
Through the Home Meal Delivery Program, we work tirelessly to ensure that seniors and individuals with disabilities benefit from nutritious meal programs that improve their quality of life and allow them to stay independent while aging in their own homes.
How to Enroll
FOR SENIORS, 60 AND OLDER:
The Home Meal Delivery Program for seniors is managed by The Chicago Department of Family and Support Services.

FOR INDIVIDUALS WITH DISABILITIES, 18 TO 59 YEARS OLD:
The Home Delivered Meals for Individuals with Disabilities program (HDMID) is managed by our partners at the Chicago Mayor’s Office for People with Disabilities.

Meal Delivery Drivers Offer Connection to Homebound Seniors
In addition to battling hunger, our clients are often isolated and alone. One in four seniors live alone, and the U.S. Surgeon General has declared that the effects of loneliness can be as deadly smoking 15 cigarettes per day. Oftentimes, our clients have lost a spouse, their children moved away, or their limited mobility has left them isolated from their community.
The Meals on Wheels Chicago delivery drivers do more than deliver a meal. They offer a friendly smile, conversation, and a moment of connection. An astonishing 84% of clients say that their delivery driver is the only person they see all week. Our delivery drivers befriend our clients and often become as close as a family member.
Healthy, Freshly Prepared Meals are Delivered Weekly
Meals are planned by a registered dietician using low-calorie, low-fat, and low-sodium ingredients. All meals are freshly prepared by an executive chef and neatly packaged in easy-to-open, recyclable containers and are delivered weekly.
Special meals are delivered on six federal holidays. It is an immense comfort to sit down at a festive table – even if it is a table for one.
